In a study published online in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, a team led by James C. Liao, Chancellor's Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UCLA Engineering has shown success in producing 15 to 30 grams per liter of n-butanol by constructing a biochemical pathway and adding a driving force to E. coli, setting a record beyond current production practices.
